How It Works
Step 1: Free Consultation
A personalized treatment plan will then be created with your aesthetic preferences, budget, and long-term maintenance in mind.
Step 2: Design
Your artist will collaborate with you to create a custom hairline design suited to your goals.
Step 3: Numbing
Topical numbing is applied to reduce discomfort during your procedure.
Step 4: Tattoo
Your SMP procedure will take between 1-3 hours, depending on the size of the procedure area and level of restoration.
Step 5: Follow-Up
Your SMP treatment is completed over multiple sessions, allowing us to refine and perfect your result with each visit.

Is it a Tattoo?
Yes, scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a tattoo. Many studios will use a permanent makeup tattoo machine that is designed for cosmetic work, but some studios will use body tattoo machines – which is not recommended.
How Long Does SMP Last?
SMP is designed to last for 3 years or more. Clients with oily skin are expected to need a touch up procedure at around 2-3 years while clients with dry skin are expected to need a touch up after 3-5 years.
Is SMP Removable?
If you decide at any point that SMP is not right for you, it can be safely removed with laser tattoo removal. Because SMP is implanted more superficially than traditional body tattoos, fewer sessions are typically needed for removal.
Is This Treatment Affordable?
Yes, SMP is considered affordable, especially when compared to other hair restoration services. Each session will cost between $600-$1200, depending on the size. Clients are expected to see their best results following 2-3 sessions.
A hair transplant is estimated to cost $4,000-$15,000, as of 2024. Prescription topical and oral treatments for hair loss cost around $50-$100 per month, and must be applied indefinitely to maintain results.
Since results are expected to last 3 years or more, the cost to maintain the results is drastically lower than that of topical treatments, prescription medication, injections, wig applications, and many other services.
Are SMP Results Realistic?
Yes, good SMP results are extremely lifelike when blended together with the existing hairs and against bare skin with no real hairs in sight.
When SMP is done correctly on a bald client, the tattooed hairline is expected to appear in the style of a buzzcut. The hairline is mapped and designed to be both neat and clean, representing a well executed haircut.
All RealTint® SMP technicians are trained in hairline mapping techniques as well as how to tattoo various levels of hair density. RealTint® SMP artists are capable of creating many variations of the classic buzzcut, including replicating the look of a “fade” hairstyle.
Will SMP Damage My Scalp?
No, SMP poses little risk of skin injury. There is no bleeding expected during the tattoo process and no recovery time needed following the procedure.
The RealTint® PULSE SMP machine uses needles that are designed with a built-in skin guard. This means that the needle depth will remain consistent throughout the entire procedure, leaving little room for human error and natural hand fatigue.
SMP sessions can take anywhere between one hour to several hours, depending on the size of the treatment area.
Does SMP Affect My Hair Growth?
SMP does not adversely affect hair growth. Similar to microneedling, the action of the needle entering the skin may stimulate follicle activity and encourage more hair growth. This is a pleasant side effect, though it is temporary.
Can I Still Get a Hair Transplant Before/After Getting SMP?
Yes, getting a hair transplant will not affect a client’s eligibility for getting an SMP procedure.
SMP can be done before or after a hair transplant with the added benefit of having the option to cover any surgical scars with the SMP tattoo.
Do I need a Doctor’s Clearance to Get SMP?
If you are currently on medication for anything, including for hair loss treatment, you will need a doctor’s clearance before getting a tattoo. This is important to prioritize health, and to ensure that the skin will not be affected by medication so that you can get a good SMP result.
