If you’ve ever wished your lips looked just a touch more defined, even in the absence of makeup, Lip Blush might be your perfect solution.
Modern permanent makeup (PMU) has come a long way from the harsh lip liner tattoos of the early 2000s. The transition from traditional coil machines to modern rotary devices has introduced a new era of advanced machine techniques. Today, Lip Blush offers soft color, definition, and even symmetry and color correction for transformative results that are indistinguishable from naturally gifted lips.
But before you book your appointment, there are some essential things you need to know, including how to prepare, what healing looks like, and why the results aren’t truly “final” until several weeks later.
What Is Lip Blush?

Lip Blush is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing procedure that enhances the natural color of your lips using a PMU machine. It can be sheer, bold, or color-corrective. depending on your skin tone and goals.
If your lips are naturally pale or have lost pigment over time, Lip Blush adds vibrancy and shape. If your lips are pigmented with darker tones, especially blue or purple hues common in melanin-rich skin, lip color neutralization can be done, and is recommended, before applying the desired cosmetic color. This involves using complementary pigments (such as orange or yellow-orange) to counterbalance those cooler hues before layering your target color. If this seems confusing, don’t worry–your board-certified artist is well versed in color theory so you don’t have to be. When in doubt, ask the pro’s!
RealTint® pigments, exclusive to Hyper Real Academy, are specially formulated to heal true-to-color and provide high vibrancy with less trauma to the skin. Our custom pigment formulas are highly concentrated, allowing each pass to deposit maximum color for minimal trauma to the skin. This is one of the reasons why our Lip Blush procedures do not require the standard 6-week touch up.
Do You Need a Touch-Up?

Touch-ups are standard with Lip Blush and are typically scheduled 6 to 8 weeks after your initial session. During this second appointment, your artist can correct any patchy areas, add saturation, or make small adjustments to the shape. However, our RealTint® Lip Blush procedures do not require a 6 week touch up.
At Hyper Real Academy, we focus on advanced machine techniques that work seamlessly with our cutting-edge PMU technology. Since our machines are updated annually, our artists are continually mastering the latest modern methods to stay at the forefront of the industry.
RealTint® Lip Blush results are expected to last 2 to 5 years following the initial procedure before a touch up is recommended.
Pre-Procedure Preparation: Don’t Skip This!
Preparing for Lip Blush can be just as important as the aftercare. Here’s how to set yourself up for success:
Antiviral Medication
Cold sore blisters are symptoms of the HSV-1 virus. If you’ve ever had a cold sore in your life, you should begin a round of antiviral medication before your appointment. The trauma from the PMU needle entering the lips can trigger a flare-up, even in individuals who have the HSV-1 virus but no history of symptoms. A breakout during healing can affect pigment retention and negatively impact your results.
Consult your doctor about taking medication like Valacyclovir, Acyclovir, or other antiviral treatments starting a few days before the procedure.
Hydration and Exfoliation
Lips that are dry, cracked, or peeling don’t hold pigment as well as healthy, moisturized skin. In the week before your appointment:
- Gently exfoliate with a sugar scrub
- Use a hydrating balm frequently
- Avoid long sun exposure and drying lip products
A little preparation before a Lip Blush appointment goes a long way. These simple steps can significantly improve results for clients who want a seamless, one-session procedure without the concern of frequent touch up procedures.
Healing Stages: The Real Timeline
Lip blush healing is a multi-phase journey. It’s important to trust the process, especially considering that the pigment you see on Day 2 is not what you’ll have in Week 6.
1. Initial Stage (Days 1–3)

Right after your appointment, your lips will look slightly swollen and more vibrant than expected. This is normal. The color is concentrated and may appear bold or even too intense.
2. Peeling and Scabbing (Days 4–7)

Your lips will begin to peel like a mild sunburn. Do not pick or peel! Your skin is releasing the dead skin layer, and removing it prematurely will result in patchiness.
3. Layered Healing (Weeks 2–4)
Your lips may look very light after peeling, sometimes even as light as before your procedure. In PMU, we call this the “ghosting” stage. This stage causes a lot of panic, but it’s normal. As the skin is regenerating, your Lip Blush pigment is still settling beneath the skin and will begin to resurface in the coming week.
4. Uneven Pigmentation (Weeks 4–5)

Areas across the lips may heal at different rates; this may result in uneven spots that will resolve in the next few days.
5. True Results (Week 5 and after)
Once fully healed, you’ll see your true healed color. It will be about 30–60% lighter than what it looked like during the procedure, depending on what type of Lip Blush technique is used (i.e. Airy Sheer, Full-Saturation, Ombré Gradient).
Aftercare Is Not Optional!

Your aftercare directly affects your healed results. This includes:
- Avoiding hot, spicy, and acidic foods for the first 72 hours
- Using a PMU-safe healing ointment
- Keeping lips clean and moisturized, but not over-washed
- Avoiding sun, pools, and saunas during the first week
- Absolutely no makeup on the lips during healing
- Avoid skincare with active ingredients, such as Vitamin C and retinols, during healing
Failing to follow aftercare can result in poor pigment retention, infection, or scar tissue. Sun exposure without adequate protection can be especially damaging and can potentially cause hyperpigmentation.
