Let’s clear something up: PMU is a tattoo. Yes, it involves machines, needles, and pigments. But the intention behind it is different in that it’s designed to enhance your natural features in a soft, enduring way. 

A key characteristic of this procedure that separates PMU from body art is that the former is done in a shallower skin layer than the latter; effectively producing a softer tattoo that is expected to fade with time.

Permanent Eyeliner is a PMU treatment that places pigment along the lash line on the upper or lower eyelid. The result of this enhancement is eyes that appear brighter, lashes that look fuller, and absolutely no risk of your eyeliner smudging halfway through the day. The pigment used in Permanent Eyeliner can be black, brown, ash, or even colored, depending on your skin tone, aesthetic goals, and desired visibility.

Despite the term “permanent”, PMU eyeliner isn’t forever. It’s designed to fade gracefully over time, typically lasting 2 to 5 years. Factors like skin type, lifestyle, and pigment depth all play a role in how long the results remain vibrant. 

Your body naturally attempts to metabolize tattoo pigment over time. In fact, as soon as the pigment is deposited into the skin, the largest organ of the body, it will immediately begin to break down the tattoo. So while it won’t wash off, the tattoo will fade, and this will happen to everyone. 

Communicating the nature and limitations of Permanent Makeup can be complicated, but it must be done ethically. That’s why ethical PMU artists never promise “forever” results, and why we don’t call PMU “semi-permanent makeup”, because it implies something that fully disappears–which also isn’t accurate.  

After the pigment fades over the years, clients may choose to get a touch up procedure that can include refreshing the color, sharpening the edges, or intensifying the color. Maintenance is the only way to accomplish “forever” results. 

Yes. PMU eyeliner can be lightened or removed using either:

• Laser tattoo removal
• Saline tattoo removal

Laser and saline removal methods are both minorly invasive, with the former requiring the supervision of a licensed physician and the latter requiring the practitioner to be licensed in PMU. Both methods are safe when performed by licensed professionals. 

Home remedies are never recommended for tattoo removal, as the pigment sits too deep beneath the skin for topical treatments to reach—and any method invasive enough to be effective should never be attempted outside of a professional setting.

Full removal is not always the goal of these procedures. Laser removal procedures are frequently used to gently lighten existing pigment, creating a clean canvas so future touch-up procedures heal beautifully and appear fresh without the interference of old color. These procedures are designed to fade the tattoo rather than eliminate it completely, which is why they’re often referred to as “partial removal” or “laser lightening” treatments. Like any other laser tattoo removal, these must also be done by licensed laser technicians. 

After multiple rounds of touch up procedures, usually spanning the course of 8-10 years, you might consider getting a partial removal to lighten the pigment. This will remove any excess pigment, eliminate blurred edges, and greatly enhance the results of future touch up procedures. 

Tattoos implanted at the correct depth fade more predictably and are easier to remove, yet another reason why choosing the right artist matters.

1. Consultation

All consultations are free at Hyper Real Academy. During your consultation, we will discuss your goals, style preferences, and your skin type. We can even pre-draw the liner so you can visualize the final look before making any decisions. 

2. Numbing & Skin Prep

The eyelids are cleansed. Then, the procedure area is numbed using a PMU-safe anesthetic (up to 5% lidocaine). You’ll feel minimal discomfort during the procedure. Many of our clients report that Permanent Eyeliner is the most comfortable of all PMU procedures.

3. Mapping & Pre-Draw

We pencil in your eyeliner and make adjustments until the shape is perfect. Only once you’re happy with the design do we begin tattooing.

4. Tattoo Application
