The Jetset Artist: A PMU Nomad Guide

You are booked and busy. Hundreds of artists want your schedule, your clientele, your success.

And still, when you picture your dream career, you find yourself looking at someone else’s life.

At some point, between the third brow procedure of the day and scrubbing pigment off your bench at 7:00 PM, you’ve probably scrolled past a “digital nomad” on Instagram. You know the one—laptop open on a Balinese beach, a coconut in hand, claiming they “work from anywhere.”

There will always be greener grass in other pastures. You know this, but at the moment you scroll past such an idyllic picture, all you’re feeling is green with envy.

The Digital Nomad has become a cultural symbol of freedom. This perfect marriage of career and lifestyle has become the new American Dream, flaunted through Instagram posts of laptops perched on café tables, slow mornings, fast WiFi, and the delicious illusion that a day’s work can be done without leaving the bed.

The freedom of remote work is coveted by the wildly ambitious, the aggressively unambitious, and everyone in between. Some want adventure. Some want comfort. Some simply want to get away from that dreadful fluorescent office lighting. Freedom, adventure, and the ability to earn six figures while wearing pajamas is—quite frankly—peak.

But for us? We’re in the business of skin. If I were to start “working from bed” today, I’d lose my license by tomorrow.

At first glance, permanent makeup seems to sit firmly outside this fantasy. How can you be anything close to a digital nomad when you need to be physically present for each service?

Furthermore, PMU is regulated. We, PMU artists, are tied to state laws, licensing boards, health departments, and IRL PMU clinics. After all, we can’t tattoo eyebrows through a laptop screen.

At least we won’t lose our jobs to AI any time soon (I hope).

So no, PMU artists can’t become “digital nomads” in the truest sense of the word.

Then is our nomadic dream dead? Nope! Not even close.

It’s 28° here in New York City, I just slipped on black ice, dropped my $8 matcha on a patch of rat-gray snow. I have water in my Uggs—and it’s not even noon.

Today, let’s pack our bags and jet to somewhere warm. Let me show you everything you need to know to become a real PMU nomad: a traveling artist!

Yes, we all know that some artists work illegally, so of course they can bring their “work” everywhere. They can float from city to city with no licenses, no insurance, and no regard for local regulations.

They do as they please…until they’re caught.

That lifestyle exists, I won’t hide it from you, but it is not aspirational. And it is certainly not professional. Illegal practice is not sustainable in any industry, especially not ours.

We’re artists, not fugitives.

We are not here to romanticize cutting corners (though the irony of my last article being “Why Lazy PMU Artists Are Winning” is not lost on me). We are here to talk about building a career that travels without compromising legality or breaking ethics.

What’s the point of being a jetsetter if you can’t sleep at night?

To live this lifestyle without looking over your shoulder, you have to do a lot of planning and fill out a lot of paperwork. Working as a traveling artist does require more strategy than if you were in just one location, but it is not as intimidating as people assume.

Most states have specific provisions for guest artists. For example, in Florida, you can apply for a Guest Tattoo Artist Registration that’s valid for 14 consecutive days. In New York City, they offer a Temporary Tattoo Artist License for 7 days. The application usually includes proof of existing licensure, bloodborne pathogen (BBP) certification, and a host location agreement.

Most states offer temporary licenses or guest artist permits. These are designed for professionals who intend to work for a limited time frame rather than permanently relocate (like at a tattoo convention).

Before you apply, make sure you have:

1. A copy of your primary license.
2. Proof of state-approved training and/or board certification (from the AAM or SPCP).
3. Your BBP certification (often needs to be dated within the last year).
4. A formal agreement with the host shop (usually a percentage split or a daily chair rental fee).

Your insurance needs to travel with you, too. Don’t assume the host shop’s insurance covers you. Most don’t. You need a professional liability policy that specifically includes “off-site” or “travel” coverage.

Pro-tip: The host studio will often ask to be “named as an additional insured” on your policy for the duration of your stay.

Once approved, you are legally cleared to work in that state for the duration of your permit.

Paperwork done. Anxiety over.

A traveling PMU artist must still show up to a physical location to work. This is not a “work in bed” profession. You will still glove up. You will still prep a tray. You will still spend hours face-to-face with a client whose brows you care deeply about.

The freedom is changing where you do it. Instead of being permanently anchored to one city, you can be selective. Seasonal. Intentional. Winter in Miami. Summer in New York. A month in Los Angeles. A guest spot in Austin. A return home when you feel like it.

Clients will follow you on socials, and if they’re impressed, they’ll take the relationship to the next step and catch you IRL.

By becoming partially digital, you become fully mobile. But this lifestyle only works if people know who you are.

The trick to becoming a traveling artist isn’t about the work itself being digital; it’s about your marketing being digital.

Social media is not optional here. Our socials are our engine. Your Instagram, TikTok, website, and email list are your true headquarters, even if you’re not a traveling artist. When you document your work consistently, speak with authority, and build a recognizable brand, something interesting happens.

You stop needing to chase clients down. Your clients are starting to chase you.

They don’t ask where your studio is. They ask when you will be in their city.

At that point, travel stops being speculative and starts being scheduled.

Think about it. If you invest your time in building a massive, engaged following on social platforms filled with potential clients who already trust your work, your location starts to matter less. Hyper Real Academy’s own artists work with out-of-state and even international clients all the time. Our clients take buses, drive, and fly to see us all the time.

Once you have a brand that people trust, you become the destination.

In the age of social media, clients aren’t limited to booking artists in their city. They follow artists from across the country. They post comments asking their favorite artist to come to their city. They book flights—yes, even in this economy.

If you’re a popular artist, you can post about your “Miami Winter Tour” and quickly accumulate a waitlist of Floridians who are thrilled to see that you are finally in their zip code.

This is the strategy that many of our fellow artists rely on.

Most reputable PMU clinics love hosting guest talent—it brings fresh energy, new techniques, and a temporary buzz to their shop. Hyper Real Academy is no different. We offer these opportunities to graduates all the time at our numerous clinic locations.

Artists love to take guest spots as a way to travel more. They take temporary artist positions at established studios for short periods of time. The shop provides the space. The artist brings the clientele. Everyone wins.

A guest artist arrangement typically involves renting a treatment room or chair within a licensed tattoo studio or PMU clinic. The host location already meets health department standards. You are not building a clinic from scratch. You are plugging into an existing one.

I’m so glad you’re here. You’re in the best place to develop your career as a traveling artist. This is because we have bigger dreams than most. We’re here for you, for the long haul. And in 2026, we’re looking to expand.

All of our graduates are eligible to apply for guest spots at every Hyper Real Academy clinic and partner clinics. We require all artists to be AAM-board-certified and licensed in the state in which they practice for the duration of their stay as a guest artist.

We’ve been working tirelessly to build the strongest professional PMU network in the United States. Since our launch in 2020, we have grown from a single training academy in East Brunswick into a network of PMU clinics across New Jersey, New York, and Miami, with additional states already on the horizon. We are setting our sights on international destinations, so we can connect with more of our community, including the trainees and clients who have supported us from the very beginning.
