Nano Brows and Microblading – What’s the Difference?

Although microblading has been a tried-and-true PMU staple for decades, it has given way to newer technologies. It's named Nano Brows, and it's far superior, providing better results, faster, and with less irritation.

In this article, we'll discuss the technology behind nano brows, how it's better, and the differences between nano brows and microblading.

What are Nano Brows?

Nano brows are a modern brow tattooing technique that uses a digital machine to create precise hair-like strokes. It's name is not standardized; it is also called digital brow tattooing, microshading, or feather touch brows. Stylizations are available with design patterns such as wispy brows and hyperrealism brows. Nano brows are a semi-permanent solution to fill in gaps, create a more defined shape, or to add thickness to the natural eyebrows. Pigments are custom blended to match the natural hair color, with some artists electing to incorporate layers of various shades for incredibly realistic results.

Process of Nano Brows:

The process of nano brows at Hyper Real Academy involves the following steps:

1. Consultation: The first step is a consultation with a certified RealTint® nano brow artist. During the consultation, the artist will discuss your desired brow shape and color, then evaluate your natural eyebrows to determine the best shape and technique for you. Your artist will layer and blend
   RealTint® brow pigments
   to create a seamless custom color.
2. Numbing: After the consultation, the artist will apply a numbing cream to the brow area to minimize the pain and discomfort during the procedure.
3. Mapping: The artist will map out the brow shape using a brow pencil, with consideration of the client’s facial features and natural brow shape.
4. Procedure: Using a
   RealTint® digital machine
   , the artist will create hair-like strokes by depositing pigment into the skin in the direction of natural hair growth. The machine used for nano brows is equipped with
   RealTint® custom needles.
   PMU will penetrate only the top layer of the skin, at the intersection between the epidermis and dermis, creating a shallow and precise stroke. The artist will build up the brow gradually, creating a natural-looking result.
5. Aftercare: After the procedure, the artist will provide their client with aftercare instructions. Using
   RealTint® Micropigmentation Recovery Serum
   is ideal for optimal healing and pigment retention. It takes about four weeks for the pigment to fully settle into the skin, and a touch-up appointment is required after this period.

Differences between Nano Brows and Microblading:

Nano brows and microblading are similar in that they both involve depositing pigment into the skin to create hair-like strokes. However, there are some key differences between the two techniques:

1. Tool Used: The most significant difference between nano brows and microblading is the tool used for the procedure. Nano brows are done using a digital machine, while microblading is done using a handheld tool with an attached blade.

   offer adjustable needle depths, speeds, and universal and custom needle configurations, offering enhanced control to the practitioner, and a much more comfortable procedure to the client.
2. Depth of Pigment: Nano brows create a shallower stroke, while microblading creates a deeper stroke. This means that microblading may cause more discomfort and take longer to heal. Nano brows typically will not scab or “ghost”. This is an especially important difference for clients with sensitive skin.
3. Hairstroke Precision: Nano brows use a digital machine that can create more precise and consistent hair strokes. Microblading is done by hand, and the strokes may vary in size and shape. This is also evident during the fading process, as microbladed brows may fade unevenly and complicate the results of subsequent touch up appointments.
4. Longevity: Nano brows tend to last longer than microblading. Nano brows can last up to 2-3 years, while microblading lasts around 1-2 years.

Advanced technology ensures that each machine stroke is uniform in size and depth. With a hand tool, it is impossible to replicate a machine’s control of needle speed, depth of each stroke, and precise entrance into the skin with no excess damage.

This is the biggest factor as to why nano brows and microblading are worlds apart, with the latter becoming significantly outdated.
