Inside the Experience: What to Expect as a PMU Model

At Hyper Real Academy, we train the next generation of elite permanent makeup artists, and every artist-in-training must demonstrate real skill by building a professional portfolio. That’s where our models play a vital role.

As a PMU model, you’ll either be:

A student model (worked on by a student under trainer supervision)

or

A live demo model (worked on by the trainer during a live demonstration for students)

In both cases, you’re receiving top-tier work that our clinic is known for, at a fraction of the cost.

Now that you know what’s in it for you, you might be wondering: why do we offer this kind of deal? What’s in it for us?

As both a clinic and a training academy, we’re always looking for models who are open to signing a photo release for educational content, or comfortable having students observe their procedure. Because your participation plays a crucial role in helping future artists learn, we’re happy to offer our premium services to you at a fraction of the usual price. 

When you sign up as a student model, your procedure will be performed by a well-prepared student under the direct supervision of an AAM Platinum-certified instructor. 

At Hyper Real Academy, you’ll never be treated by someone without experience—we require that every student must complete guided machine training on synthetic skin and pass a practical skills test before working with real people.

If you wish to model for our student, expect the following:

• Highly controlled tattoo quality, supervised by a team member with a minimum of 6 years of PMU experience. 
• The trainer watches closely and can step in at any moment to guide or correct.
• The trainer is present at every stage of the procedure, from consultation to mapping to the tattoo process.
• All procedures are completed using the same RealTint® machines, techniques, and custom-formulated pigments that our clients love.
• Our team will typically lead the client consultation and go over aftercare instructions. 
• Any follow up appointments are offered at a discount. 

Because this is a training experience, your appointment will take a bit longer than a typical service. Students may ask their instructor questions as they work, and instructors will give feedback throughout the procedure.

If you’re interested in signing up as a student model but have had previous work done, either by us or another clinic, please schedule a free consultation with us first, either virtually or in person.

In a live demonstration, the trainer performs the procedure while students observe. You’ll be receiving service directly from a top-level professional, while students watch, take notes, and ask questions. The environment is quiet, focused, and respectful.

Expect a little extra time for Q&A during the procedure. Otherwise, the experience is identical to a typical studio service.

All models must sign a photo release form before the procedure. Why?

Because we use model procedures to teach, analyze, and show real healed results. Your photos may appear in training materials, before-and-after galleries, or in classroom discussions.

 

This is part of how we maintain transparency and raise the standard of work in the PMU industry.

Here’s how touch-ups work for models:

Brows: A 4-6 week touch-up is recommended for all brow clients, including models. Models receive a discounted rate for a touch-up session.

Eyeliner & Lip Blush: These procedures typically do not require touch-up’s at all. Models receive a discounted rate for a touch-up session if needed. 

Bonus: We love it when models send us healed photos, and students especially benefit from seeing their results over time.
