Permanent makeup (PMU) is an incredible way to enhance your natural beauty and simplify your daily routine.
Whether you’re investing in Nano Brows, Lip Blush, Eyeliner, or Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP), the success of your treatment doesn’t just depend on your artist’s skill—it also depends on how well you care for your new look during the healing process.
As both a PMU practitioner and instructor, I can’t stress enough the importance of proper aftercare for achieving stunning, long-lasting results. Here’s your ultimate guide to PMU aftercare for these popular treatments.

The Importance of Aftercare

PMU involves implanting pigment into the skin, so aftercare is essential to allow the area to heal properly. Neglecting aftercare can lead to uneven pigment retention, infections, or even scarring. Think of aftercare as the bridge between a flawless treatment and long-term satisfaction.
In my experience, clients who follow their aftercare instructions meticulously not only heal faster but also achieve more vibrant, even results. I always share these tips with my clients to ensure their PMU investments are well-protected, and I’m hoping this article will make a difference in your recovery!
Nano Brows Aftercare

Nano Brows are a game-changer for anyone seeking perfectly shaped, natural-looking eyebrows. To ensure your brows heal beautifully, follow these steps:
Avoid moisture: This means no heavy sweating, swimming, or soaking in water.
No touching or picking: As tempting as it might be, don’t pick at scabs or touch the treated area. This can disrupt the pigment and cause uneven healing.
Use the provided healing serum: Apply a light layer of the healing serum provided by your artist to keep the area hydrated. Avoid harsh skincare products like retinols or acids near your brows.
Protect from sunlight: Sun exposure can fade your pigment prematurely. Use a hat or umbrella to shield your brows. Sunscreen is fine to use after 2 weeks.
I always tell clients to treat their Nano Brows like a piece of art in its curing phase—a little extra care goes a long way.
Lip Blush Aftercare

Lip Blush treatments create a soft, natural tint that enhances your lips’ shape and color. Here’s how to keep your pout perfect:
Hydrate, but carefully: Keep your lips moisturized with the aftercare serum provided, but avoid over-applying.
No salty or spicy foods: During the first 48 hours, avoid anything that could irritate your lips, including hot drinks, spicy foods, alcohol, or salty foods.
Gentle cleansing: Use a damp cotton pad to clean the area if needed, but don’t rub or scrub.
Be patient with flaking: Light flaking is normal as your lips heal. Let the flakes shed naturally to avoid patchiness.
No lip scrubs, Botox, or fillers for a month: All of these things can irritate your lips, which can make the healed result look significantly worse.
It can be difficult to though it out (especially with no salty or spicy foods, believe me), but the end results are well worth it.
Eyeliner Aftercare

Permanent eyeliner enhances your eyes effortlessly, but the delicate skin around your eyes requires extra care:
No rubbing: Gently blot the area if necessary, but avoid rubbing your eyes.
Skip lashes and makeup for now: Avoid lash extensions and makeup such as mascara until fully healed (about a month).
No contacts for 3 days: Contacts can be irritating to your eyes; it’s best to be on the safe side.
Minimize tears if possible: This isn’t always in your control, but the less salty tears touch your procedure area, the better.
One of my clients described eyeliner aftercare as a mini self-care retreat for her eyes—a great mindset to adopt while you heal.
SMP (Scalp Micropigmentation) Aftercare

SMP can create the illusion of a fuller head of hair or camouflage hair loss. To ensure the best results:
Wear hats when going outside, but don’t cover it all day: You want the area to breathe, but you also want to minimize sun exposure.
No sweating: Hold off on heavy exercise or activities that cause sweating for at least 2 weeks.
Avoid harsh products: Use a gentle cleanser approved by your artist, and steer clear of harsh shampoos or exfoliants.
Minimize scratching scalp: Your scalp might be itchy after the procedure; I highly recommend to mix cold water with aloe vera juice and spray it on head as needed. It will minimize the itchiness and keep the area lightly moisturized!
With SMP, I’ve seen clients’ confidence skyrocket, and proper aftercare is key to achieving those transformative results.
Tips for All PMU Treatments
While each treatment has its specific aftercare needs, there are some universal guidelines we give to all our clients:
Avoid contact with anything salty: Salt will draw the pigment out of the skin, causing it to look faded and discolored. Try to minimize sweat + tears for at least 2 weeks, and don’t swim in the ocean for a month!
Avoid harsh chemicals: Water + pat dry affected areas to keep clean, but don’t use soap! It can irritate the skin and mess with the healing process. You can use soap after a week.
Healing serum is always OK: Your PMU technician will give you a healing serum/lotion to apply to the treated area; this is always OK to use.
Keep the area dry when not using products: If the area gets damp, sweaty, or wet, it can promote bacterial growth, which is not good.
Avoid direct sunlight: The sun is your PMU’s worst enemy. Always protect your treated areas. Don’t use sunscreen until 2 weeks after the procedure!
Avoid swimming for a month: Pool water has chemicals that can slow the healing process, and ocean water is salty (see “Avoid contact with anything salty”)
Be patient: PMU results evolve over time. Initial darkness or flaking is normal and part of the process.
Your artist knows the specifics of your treatment and skin type, so prioritize their advice.
