The Recession-Proof Artist: How Permanent Makeup Endures in a Changing Economy

When the specter of recession looms, most industries draw inward. Budgets are slashed, ambitions stilled. But in the world of permanent makeup, something different happens. The artist’s tools remain steady in hand, and the quiet hum of the machine continues, unfaltering. Beauty, after all, is not so easily abandoned.

This is a story of resilience in three acts. It is told through the eyes of three women at different stages in their careers: the beginner, the builder, and the visionary. Though their perspectives vary, they are united by a shared question:

“How do I endure when others are failing?”

What follows is less a survival guide and more an anatomy of permanence. These stories are drawn from the lived experiences of artists who prove that beauty, especially the kind that lives in the skin, does not wither in a storm.

Courage in the Quiet

Sofia had just earned her license when the headlines began to change. News anchors spoke of downturns and layoffs, of families tightening their belts and businesses shuttering their doors. It seemed, at first glance, the worst possible time to enter the field.

She had no client list, no savings cushion, no rainy day fund. She only has the supplies she had saved her pennies to afford and a quiet hope that this craft might change her life.

As her friends canceled nail appointments and postponed balayage touch-ups, Sofia sat in a studio she rented by the hour, waiting. She had no money for marketing, only an Instagram account with nine photos that make up her portfolio. But the pursuit of beauty, as it often does, found a way. One afternoon, a woman sent her a DM: “I’m tired of filling in my brows every morning. How much do you charge?”

The woman wasn’t alone in her pursuit. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, beauty services had been declared nonessential, but many disagreed. People knew that brows and lashes can make a huge difference, even on the tiniest Zoom screen. Clients across the country defied public orders to visit lash techs and brow artists working quietly out of kitchens and garages. Some paid double. Others tipped in cash, desperate for a semblance of normalcy on their own faces. Some even paid using their unemployment checks.

The world had underestimated the emotional gravity of feeling beautiful.

Sofia didn’t know it yet, but she was entering an industry that consistently defies economic logic. While other beauty treatments may be seasonal splurges, permanent makeup is less fickle and more functional.

Many people adore the idea of waking up to perfectly shaped brows, skipping the daily ritual of penciling in arches that may or may not end up lopsided. PMU is a timeless solution that saves people time. It is not as easily moved as a TikTok-trending lipgloss shade.

She would go on to build her clientele, one pair of brows at a time. Her first client loved her brows so much that she brought her sister with her to the touch-up appointment. Her sister got her brows done, then introduced two members from her church. With each appointment, Sofia’s confidence bloomed. She moved forward, knowing she had chosen a path that could endure in uncertain times.

Preserving the Climb

Tara, five years into her PMU career, occupied a modest studio near the center of town. She had regulars, a comfortable income, and a great reputation. Still, as headlines of economic downturn floated into her newsfeed, a chill crept in.

Her first instinct was retreat. She could scale back her ads, discount her rates, postpone her seat in an advanced training program.

But fear, she would learn, is often louder than truth.

Historically, the beauty industry does not crumble during a recession. During the 2020 pandemic, skincare and wellness treatments surged, even as lipstick sales temporarily declined. As “clean beauty” came into vogue in 2025, clients flocked to services that promised a natural, near-invisible enhancement. Permanent makeup, luxury skincare, and “Baby Botox” were trending treatments. When bold colors returned to the mainstream, so too did the appetite for vivid cosmetic enhancements, including bolder than average Lip Blush and Permanent Eyeliner styles.

The beauty economy is tidal, like ocean waves. As one trend recedes, another takes its place. Still, demand expands steadily with each year. According to McKinsey & Company, the global beauty industry reached over $430 billion in revenue in 2023 and is projected to grow each year through 2027. The hunger for beauty is ever-present, unshrinking, and at its core, insatiable.

Permanent makeup is a rare blend of desire and necessity. It can be equal parts cosmetic and corrective. While a woman may remove a new eyeshadow palette from her cart, she is far less likely to give up her Nano Brows appointment, as the latter restores symmetry, conceals hair loss, or replaces definition lost with age.

Fear is loud. It can even be louder than the truth. But confidence is quiet. Confidence is grounded in strength.

Tara came to understand her strength: what she provides is more essential than the indulgence of impulse buys. Her service is more permanent than makeup, more rewarding than a makeup haul, and more valuable to her clients than participating in a trend. Her service provides lasting value that her clients can enjoy for years to come.

A Future-Proof Empire

Elaine is booked, busy, and by all accounts, living the dream. Her work is viral on Instagram, pinned on Pinterest, and dubbed “goals” in every comment section. Her “day in the life” videos have inspired viewers across the globe to pursue their own PMU licenses.

A master technician turned entrepreneur, she owns two thriving studios, manages a team of talented artists, and trains apprentices across the country. Her business runs with clockwork precision. Her schedule is filled, with clients waiting patiently on a growing waitlist. Despite her success, Elaine has no intention of resting on her laurels. She studies the economy, knowing that every peak is followed by a valley.

Economic hardship reveals which parts of a business are ornamental and which are essential. For Elaine, this is the time to refine her skill and reinvest in the pillars that keep her enterprise standing tall: training, retention, and relevance.

She strengthens her business from the inside out. Loyalty programs keep her clients coming back, while expanding service offerings by adding Scalp Micropigmentation and Lip Color Neutralization to allow her to reach wider demographics. Regular team meetings sharpen strengths and address areas for growth. Above all, she invests in training customer service skills, ensuring every artist on her team can speak to client needs with confidence and clarity, regardless of passing trends.

She also insulates. Six months of operational capital. A reevaluation of every expense. Quarterly projections that favor conservative growth over reckless expansion.

Elaine understands that beauty will never fall out of demand. She builds with quiet foresight, like someone who has weathered storms before and knows exactly how to brace the windows before the wind arrives.

What the Pandemic Taught Us

If ever there was proof of beauty’s durability, it arrived in the most unlikely season.

In the early days of the pandemic, when businesses were forcibly closed and uncertainty hung in the air like fog, clients continued to seek out their artists. They paid in advance for appointments they weren’t even sure would happen.

What other industry can claim that?

Beauty, and particularly PMU, reveals strength in quiet ways. PMU can help someone discover the best version of their face. It can also restore the appearance of the face from a different time in a person’s life.

A Nano Brows session restores the appearance of eyebrows lost to chemotherapy. An areola tattoo recovers the appearance of skin following a mastectomy. Scars are concealed with great care. These experiences are not passing trends.

Cosmetic and paramedical tattoos will always have a place in the human story, regardless of where the economy stands.

Strategies for Every Season: How to Recession-Proof Your Career

For the Beginner:

Start small, but think long-term. Your first handful of models can help you build a strong portfolio; these models are often friends, family members, and people you personally know. Models seldom pay full price, if anything at all.

Treat every model as you would a paying client. Though model sessions are low-stakes by design, hold yourself to a high standard. Offer a thoughtful consultation, deliver excellent service, and execute the best work you’re capable of at that moment. Each interaction is a chance to grow. Ask for honest feedback, and welcome constructive criticism. This is one of the fastest ways to refine your craft at the start of your career.

Every artist must take before and after photos, but you can ask for more from your models. Collect testimonials, healing updates, and document each person’s healed results. Clients find far more value in photos of healed results than a picture taken moments after the procedure. They often search extensively for photos of healed work and honest reviews, wanting a clear picture of what to expect before trusting someone with their face. These small efforts go a long way in building your credibility, helping you stand out in a crowded field as a rising PMU professional.

We know that even in uncertain economic times, clients continue to seek out PMU services. One of the most effective ways to recession-proof your emerging business is by strengthening your professional credibility.

For the Established Artist:
Invest in sustainability. This is the time to solidify your brand, not dilute it. Practice your machine techniques in your free time so the quality of your work does not falter. This way, you can maintain, or even raise your rates with confidence.

Those at the top of their craft retain their value, regardless of market fluctuations. You can claim your seat in the upper echelon of your industry by advancing from a PMU artist to a PMU specialist. Position yourself in a higher-end, more exclusive market by offering specialized services that demand advanced technical skill. Consider narrowing your focus to increase your profits. Transition from offering general brow, liner, and lip services to specializing in advanced services like Nano Brows, Scalp Micropigmentation, or even paramedical tattooing.

If you’ve developed a sought-after technique, explore the opportunity to teach it. Look into partnerships with wellness clinics or dermatologists to expand your reach.

Growth can happen even during challenging times. Keep learning. In our industry, stagnation is far riskier than the pursuit of growth.

For the Clinic Owner:
Invest in your team. Creating and maintaining a recession-proof business is essential to protecting the livelihoods of every member of your team. Support your staff by clearly communicating goals, from the immediate, tangible steps to the larger, long-term milestones that shape the future of your clinic.

Build systems that function without your daily input. Create a structure for consistent brand visibility and client retention. The best way to do this is to refine your messaging. Your brand should communicate reliability, not desperation. When money is tight, clients become more cautious. They seek out the PMU artist they can trust to deliver precisely what they’re looking for. Clients want to leave your clinic feeling like every dollar was well spent.

In a clinic with multiple artists, each individual’s work reflects the overall standard of the entire establishment. As a studio owner, it’s your responsibility to ensure that every artist on your team delivers consistently excellent results. Of course, this is not an easy task. Many of the most successful PMU clinic owners among us are the ones who invest in their artists. These owners prioritize scheduling training workshops, attending technique-focused seminars, and ensuring that machines are updated to meet the ever-evolving industry standards.

Building a Business that Endures

The face of the world may change, but the human desire to feel beautiful does not. In every economy, we continue to seek what makes us feel seen. Permanent makeup is not a luxury that falters when belts tighten. These procedures have the lasting power to enhance a person’s daily life for a long time. PMU is also, in many ways, a safeguard, becoming a tool that restores what time or life may have altered.

As a PMU artist, you are part of an industry that reflects the resilience of the people it serves.

Let your hands remain steady. Your work is needed.

Even now.

Especially now.
