Even seasoned and renowned professionals are racing to unlearn old techniques to make room for the new. This brings us to the question that students have been asking us for years:
Is microblading done?
Yes, microblading is “done” and truthfully, has been for years. In 2024, microblading is considered an obsolete skill. The hazardous technique of dragging a scalpel through the skin is not only less controlled but much more risky for infections. Microblading is incomparable with today’s PMU tech, and is unable to meet today’s industry standard for PMU. It is therefore rendered obsolete. The AAM requires certified trainers that are platinum board certified to participate in continuous education so that their skills are up to the industry standard.
Here are 7 permanent makeup machine techniques that every top artist should learn today:
1. Nano Brows
Nano Brows are the bread and butter of modern day PMU. Nano brows is the machine technique that creates tapered lines that resemble realistic hairstrokes. RealTint® technology focuses on advanced stabilization, powerful motors, and intricate needle configurations.

3. Ombré powder
Ombré powder brows can be designed with soft edges for a natural yet volumous look, or with clean edges to resemble the look of professionally done makeup.
Ombré powder brows will resemble the look of a blended eyebrow pomade. Hairstrokes are not always present in this design, and can be introduced to create a “combination eyebrow” pattern.
4. Soft powder
Soft powder is designed to replicate the look of powder makeup that melts into the skin. Successful soft powder brows will not appear as a block of color, but a wash of color. Because this look is meant to blend in rather than stand out, artists must take a “less is more” approach and work with a light hand.
5. Minimalist
Not all eyebrows are bold. Many clients prefer a light but defined volume. The average PMU artist will not be able to give this client what they need. However, with the right eyebrow design pattern and the right technique, the minimalistic approach can completely transform a client’s eyebrows. This technique is suitable for clients with sparse eyebrows or no eyebrows, as well as clients that wish to see a natural eyebrow effect.
6. Multicolor
Permanent makeup pigments and tattoo inks are meant to be blended for endless options of custom color. Though many artists are satisfied with choosing one color, some will choose to layer two or even three different eyebrow colors for a multidimensional effect. The multicolor technique can be done when creating hairstrokes or shading. This technique is especially beneficial for clients with light colored skin and bright colored hair.
7. Brow Lift
Botox is not the only procedure that can lift the eyebrows. Eyebrows can be slightly shifted to appear more lifted. This technique is done during the mapping and eyebrow designing process. The eyebrow is slightly lifted at the arch area. The result is a more elegant, curved arch.
