Tiny Tattoos at the 2025 Darkside NJ Art & Oddities Expo

This October, Hyper Real Academy had the pleasure of attending the 2025 Darkside New Jersey Art & Oddities Expo, a show best known for its eclectic mix of artistry, tattoo culture, and the beautifully bizarre. Among the many talented tattoo artists featured in this year’s Tattoo Artists’ Alley, we were proud to represent something unique. We stood as the only institution in attendance specializing in permanent makeup.

While the show leaned heavily into body art tattooing, we offered an experience that bridged both worlds. Hyper Real Academy presented a different side of tattoo artistry, one rooted in precision, subtlety, and aesthetic enhancement.

Our senior artist, Angela, remained booked from start to finish. Guests came to explore the world of cosmetic tattooing and left with Nano Brows, Combination Brows, Tiny Tattoos, and even hair tinsel, a playful yet surprisingly elegant addition that turned quite a few heads. Unsurprisingly, the star of the show was our signature Nano Brows, our most requested technique of 2025.

Angela’s work attracted a wide variety of attendees, and even fellow tattoo artists. Many of our tattoo and PMU clients started out as onlookers, booking their slot after seeing Angela’s work in live action. Guests who were unfamiliar with how advanced permanent makeup has become, quickly saw the difference after witnessing the results, especially with how well RealTint® pigments blended with natural features.

It was especially rewarding to speak with traditional tattoo enthusiasts who were surprised to learn that PMU does not need to be harsh, dark, or even artistically expressive. Done correctly, it can be soft, subtle, and remarkably natural.

Tiny tattoos are typically done in the fine-line style of body art. It is almost always done using a rotary device and ultrafine needle. Similar to PMU, a high degree of machine control and discipline is required to create successful results.

Although the tattoo may be small in size, the level of precision and commitment to quality is no less than what is required for a large-scale piece of body art. 

Tattoos often carry deep personal significance—some are finely rendered portraits of loved ones, others are delicate scripts painstakingly replicated from a loved one’s handwriting. Tiny tattoos demand great care; they are anything but low-stakes.

Attending an event like Darkside allowed us to have many conversations and connections with the tattoo community. Many conversations began with curiosity and ended in a deeper understanding. Although body art and permanent makeup may appear to exist in separate worlds, both are driven by a shared commitment to artistry and an unwavering focus on precision. 

Today’s PMU is shaped by design thinking, artistic discipline, and technological innovation. Clients today expect and deserve cosmetic results that are both imperceptible and enduring, much like the refined outcomes achieved by skilled injectors and plastic surgeons. After all, board certification exists in PMU for this very reason.

With the precision offered by modern PMU machines, our artists can effortlessly create fine line tattoos, bridging the hyperrealistic discipline of cosmetic tattooing with the more expressive world of body art. Events like this allow us to demonstrate that progress firsthand.
