Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a cutting-edge cosmetic tattooing procedure that replicates the appearance of natural hair follicles using advanced dotwork techniques and a specialized machine. Unlike outdated SMP methods that rely on manual hand control, we use the RealTint® PULSE, an automated SMP system designed for precise, consistent, and realistic results. This eliminates the need for freehand tattooing, as well as reduces the element of human error that leads to botched tattoos.

SMP is designed to be completed in multiple sessions for optimal results. Follow-up procedures are scheduled 4-6 weeks apart. Each treatment is customized to suit the client’s budget and aesthetic goals.

Is SMP a tattoo?
Yes, SMP and all permanent makeup (PMU) procedures are considered to be cosmetic/paramedical tattoos.
How long does SMP last?
SMP is expected to last for over 2 years before needing a touch up procedure. SMP results last for longer on normal to dry skin than on oily/combination skin.
How many sessions are required?
The number of sessions depends on the size of the treatment area, the degree of hair loss restoration, and whether there is a plan to treat areas that are predicted to recede further. The client’s budget, skin type and aesthetic goals also may affect the number of sessions we recommend for them. Small areas (size of a business card) usually require 2-3 sessions. Medium areas usually require 3-4 sessions. Treatment of the entire scalp usually requires 3-5 sessions.
Is SMP an alternative to hair transplant surgery?
While a hair transplant moves actual follicles to balding areas, SMP uses cosmetic tattooing to replicate the look of real hair follicles, creating the illusion of a fuller head of hair or a clean, buzzed style. The biggest difference is that SMP is a tattoo that is flat against the skin, rather than a transplant that moves live growing follicles.
SMP is often combined with hair transplants to further enhance the appearance of hair volume or camouflage visible gaps and scarring.
So while it doesn’t regrow hair, SMP offers a safe, reliable, and visually powerful alternative, without the risks, cost, or commitment of surgery.
Should I get SMP before or after hair transplant surgery?
We recommend getting SMP after the surgery has fully healed and the transplanted hair has grown out. This way, the SMP treatment will be able to add the appearance of volume to areas with gaps in hair growth, along with covering any scars from the surgery (hair cannot grow over scar tissue).
Is SMP a good choice for people with oily skin?
It depends. SMP can be done successfully on all skin types. However, the pigment will fade faster on oily skin than on normal to dry skin. Clients with oily skin may require a touch up before 2 years have passed. Because RealTint® SMP pigments are formulated for longevity and color integrity, our clients are not expected to experience noticeable discoloration of the tattoo as it fades over time.
What are the risks of getting SMP?
SMP is a tattoo procedure with a low risk of skin infection. RealTint® SMP is a machine-automated technique, ensuring a lower risk of mistakes, blowouts, and skin injury due to improper needle placement. Follow your aftercare instructions to further minimize any risks of infection.
How long is the healing process?
SMP fully heals in 4-6 weeks.
What are the aftercare instructions for SMP?
We recommend using antimicrobial foam for the first week of healing, avoiding bar soaps and any exfoliating products. Use a recovery serum to protect the skin’s moisture barrier and lock in pigment during the healing process. Do I have to get my SMP touched up after 2 years?
