We frequently hear people asking about how to get a permanent makeup license, and wanted to explain how the process works, and why it’s well worth the investment.
New Jersey is one of the best states to get a PMU license. As the most densely populated state in all of the US, New Jersey is home to countless thriving small businesses. Even in the post-COVID-19 economy, the beauty and wellness industry saw no shortage of clientele.
In 2024, many young adults are choosing to join the permanent makeup industry, as it’s a field that gives individuals the tools and ability to work for themselves. Many small business owners are thriving. Social media and digital marketing makes it possible for artists to reach their large and increasing clientele.
In this article, we will discuss the steps we recommend for a new artist to get licensed in the state of New Jersey.
Step 1: Meet the Eligibility Requirements
In New Jersey, the eligibility requirements for obtaining a license as a permanent makeup artist will include being at least 17 years of age, having a high school diploma or equivalent, and completing 100 hours of training at a New Jersey licensed permanent makeup school that is certified with the AAM and/or the SPCP.

Artists must obtain the following before they are eligible to proceed to the licensing exam:
- Complete the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Training Certification
- Obtain liability insurance as a body art practitioner
Step 2: Complete the AAM Certified 100 Hour Training
The required training for a license must be completed at a New Jersey licensed permanent makeup school or apprenticeship program. PMU trainers must be certified with the AAM and/or SPCP. The training includes coursework in health, safety, and sanitation, as well as practical instruction on permanent makeup techniques such as machine techniques, color theory, and facial anatomy.

Step 3: Complete 15 PMU Procedures Under Apprenticeship
Hyper Real Academy and many other certified PMU trainers will offer the required apprenticeship program following the practical training program. During this apprenticeship program, 5 PMU procedures for each area, Eyebrows, Eyeliner, and Lip Color, must be completed under the supervision of a certified trainer, totaling 15 procedures.

Procedures submitted that do not meet the requirements of the licensing board will not count towards the required training and must be completed again. This will usually incur a cost to use the licensed trainer’s facilities again.
Step 4: Pass the AAM/SPCP Licensing Exam
After completing the required training, students will proceed to complete the AAM or SPCP licensing exam. The exam will include multiple choice questions and written tests to assess the student’s knowledge of permanent makeup techniques, safety regulations, and sanitation practices.
The AAM Gold exam fee costs $397 USD.
Photos of each of the 15 PMU procedure completed during the training program will be submitted for review at this time. As an added bonus, these photos can be used for your portfolio!
Step 5: Submit an Application
Once the licensing exam is complete and certification is issued, an application for a permanent makeup artist license must be submitted to the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling. The application requirements include certificates of completion from the PMU training program, AAM Gold certification, and documentation such as a valid photo ID, social security number, and any applicable fees.

In New Jersey, permanent makeup artist licenses are valid for two years.

It’s important to note that requirements for obtaining a license for a permanent makeup facility in New Jersey varies by township. There are some towns that do not permit body art establishments. It is important to check local zoning and health departments.
